Comprehensive Maintenance & Seal Replacement Guide | Rebuild Interval: 3–5 Years

SAFETY FIRST: Unplug the machine, turn off the water line/empty reservoir, and allow the machine to cool completely to room temperature before starting disassembly.

Replacement Parts Required

  • 1× Camshaft (brass valve actuator)
  • 1× Top Brew Valve & spring
  • 1× Pre-Infusion Valve & spring
  • 1× Drain Valve & spring
  • 2× Camshaft Gaskets (rubber/silicone)
  • 1× Small Teflon Cap Gasket
  • 3× Large Teflon Gaskets (flat ring gaskets)
  • 1× E61 Top Cap Filter Screen

Tools & Supplies Checklist

  • 2× Adjustable Wrenches (or open-ended)
  • Small Rubber Mallet (for breaking stuck fittings)
  • Flat-head Screwdriver
  • Dental Pick / Fine Tweezers
  • Molykote (Food-grade silicone lubricant)
  • Cafiza / Espresso Cleaner + Hot Water Bath
  • Masking Tape or Towel (protect chrome)
  • Portafilter with Blind Backflush Disc
Phase 1: Disassembly & Cleaning
Done Component / Step Procedure & Key Precautions
1. Top Cap & Mushroom Use two wrenches to break top cap loose. Remove top cap, filter screen, and gigleur. Unscrew mushroom housing and extract top brew valve + spring.
2. Lower Pre-Infusion Chamber CRITICAL Raise brew lever UP first to release internal spring tension. Unscrew bottom fitting (use rubber mallet tap if tight). Extract pre-infusion valve & spring.
3. Drain Valve Assembly Using two wrenches with opposing force, unscrew lower drain chamber. Remove internal drain valve, lower spring, and bottom sprayer cap.
4. Brew Lever & Camshaft Unscrew flat-head lever bolt, slide off lever arm. Use scissor motion with 2 wrenches to unscrew outer camshaft sleeve. Extract shaft and pick out old internal gaskets.
5. Soak & Clean Components Soak all metal valves, springs, gigleur, and brass housings in hot water + Cafiza. Ensure gigleur pinhole is 100% free of scale/oils. Rinse thoroughly.
Phase 2: Reassembly & Lubrication
Done Component / Step Procedure & Key Precautions
1. Camshaft Installation Lightly coat new camshaft gaskets & shaft with Molykote. Insert shaft with cam lobe facing DOWN (resting position). Reinstall sleeve and lever arm.
2. Top Brew Valve & Mushroom Lubricate top brew valve gasket with Molykote. Drop spring & valve into top group. Install new large Teflon gasket, thread mushroom down. Reinsert gigleur, screen & top cap.
3. Pre-Infusion & Drain Valve Verify old Teflon gasket is removed from body. RAISE LEVER, install lubricated pre-infusion valve (gasket UP) + new Teflon gasket. Reassemble drain valve (gasket UP) & tighten.
Phase 3: Cold Leak & Pressure Testing
Done Test Step Procedure & Acceptance Criteria
1. Blind Disc Backflush Lock portafilter with blind disc into group head. Power machine on while COLD (prevents burn risk during leak checks).
2. Pressure Build & Inspection Raise lever to build pressure. Inspect mushroom joint, lever neck, and lower pre-infusion cap for water droplets. Tighten any weeping joint slightly.
3. Exhaust Discharge Test Lower brew lever completely. Verify a strong, clean jet of water discharges into the drip tray from the bottom exhaust. Re-test once fully heated.
